Character Information
Name: Jyushimatsu Matsuno
Series: Osomatsu-san
Appearance: Here
Age: Vague canon age is in his twenties, so I'll put him at 25
Canon Point: End of Season 2
Canon History: Osomatsu-kun | Osomatsu-san | Episode Guide | Jyushimatsu
Personality: (CW: mentions of a suicide attempt & sexual references)
Jyushimatsu is extremely cheerful, without a doubt the sunshine of the Matsuno family, a happy explosion of energy formed as a person. That big smile rarely leaves his face, even during some situations in which he has little reason to keep his spirits high. As confirmed by Ichimatsu, who is the closest brother to him, Jyushimatsu has no hidden emotional darkness whatsoever and everything he does and feels is genuine. He gets easily excitable over the tiniest things, to the point of being ridiculous, but his bright predisposition gives him a charming aura that, in some episodes, brought him more positive relationships with people outside his family than his other brothers ever had in the show.
Though he still acts like a spoiled brat and his selfishness is displayed most when he joins the sextuplets' hivemind, he had a few moments of kindness where he genuinely cared about someone and tried to help them the best he could. He spent all day searching for Ichimatsu's cat friend that ran away after a tense fight, and before that he was looking for roundabout ways to help Ichimatsu get some friends. At times he also used his goofy nature to make people laugh, like he did to a nameless girl who was attempting suicide before their chance encounter prevented it. He's not the best at actually helping, but his efforts are genuine and he seldom asks for anything in return. During serious situations, he's the one who pushes his negative emotions aside and tries to liven up the mood in order to ease everyone's worries. When Osomatsu kicked him out of rage and terrified him, he saw how worried and tense his family was and forced himself to act cheerful in an attempt to dispel the heavy atmosphere.
Moreover, it's hard to tell from his appearance that he's a stock broker. There are hidden depths to Jyushimatsu proving how there's more to him than the loony fool he appears to be most of the time. It gets confusing when his brothers, in one skit, try to figure out just what he exactly is, and get their hands on the family album when he was depicted as a normal and shy kid in his childhood, only to start getting wilder through the years; it turns out that he'd always been wild since birth. He's very capable of rational thought, maturity, and sense of commitment, which surfaces during serious situations in which he has to face some harsh reality. In both seasons, he found a job and stuck with it until the canon's gag elements returned to pretty much ruin everything. In any case, he definitely chooses to keep being the wild-card Jyushimatsu everyone knows because he doesn't want to grow up and renounce his carefree NEET lifestyle.
Jyushimatsu particularly stands out amongst the other sextuplets for being incredibly loud and therefore very obnoxious to a lot of people. Everything he does is accompanied by his no-indoor voice and it's difficult to make him go quiet unless there's a valid reason to. Holding a normal conversation with him that doesn't turn into a shouting contest is a tough task if someone has little patience with him, and it doesn't help that he often pays scarce attention to what the other party tells him, leading to funny or very awkward misunderstandings. There's some hypocrisy in how Jyushimatsu himself doesn't seem to appreciate loud noises. At the end of the skit where he turned his brothers into semi-carbon copies of himself (see abilities below for details), he made a dry comment about how they were all being loud.
Although he's more considerate towards strangers, Jyushimatsu has no mouth filter whatsoever and can come off as brutally honest. Whatever comes to his mind he will blurt out, whether it's a blatant insult or an uncomfortable question. He's shameless, very fond of dick jokes, and doesn't shy away from being generally vulgar, breaking that image of innocence built on his smile and cheery attitude. His sex drive is so high that he even ends up growing a boner at the mere idea that he has a chance to go to a mixer and meet pretty girls. He also has no qualms at all when it comes to freely peeing in the middle of a public beach area. Many of the gross-out comedic scenes in the show come from him alone.
He also has a hard time controlling his emotions when something he either loves or hates is involved. The irrationality comes with the fact he can go utterly mad over things like baseball and cold temperature with little to no provocation. If he's not calmed down quickly by someone or something, he can even turn homicidal and cause a big havoc. Ichimatsu's presence at times makes sure he won't go wild that badly, but even then Jyushimatsu may end up having peaks of absolute madness that even his older brother can't quell.
The idea of "being an adult" is a mild but insistent fear that he expresses through his childish behavior. He clearly doesn't want to grow up and take responsibility for his actions. Being alone without his brothers around also unsettles him, though the gap can be slowly filled with other people if he starts gathering friends. Other than that, as mentioned before, he doesn't really seem to have a darkness of his own that isn't somehow laced with his brothers, although he showed actual terror when Osomatsu furiously kicked him in a specifically serious situation, which shows that he doesn't know how to deal with people he knows so well and loves who suddenly act up and become violent with no gag purpose backing them up.
Overall, even despite his weirdness, Jyushimatsu's mind and moral grounds work like a regular human being in his situation. He tries to be a good person, and in many cases he succeedes as he gained some friends along the way, but the status quo dictates that he stays a NEET like the rest of his brothers and that comes with quite a bit of compromise. He remains a selfish, irresponsible, and sometimes even cruel person when he's most influenced by the hivemind he and his brothers share. He would have no qualms committing crimes and completely ruining someone's day if he gains something from it, either material loots or petty feelings like revenge for being wronged no matter what his victim has done. He could even resort to violence if he feels the need to, and is hardly apologetic unless the situation is serious and he hurt someone he's close to. His impulsive behaviour and inclination to beat stuff up is hardly controlled by his brothers unless it inconveniences them.
Abilities: Because of the intense training he goes through everyday, Jyushimatsu possesses high levels of strength, agility and stamina. He's capable to lift people easily and throw them a great distance away, or use them as a human baseball bat and swing them several hundred times. Most things that would exhaust a person he can do without breaking a sweat, like running or swimming nonstop for as much as he wants.
He can't turn into a humanoid animal like Ichimatsu, but he shares some traits with dogs like biting random things and having a heightened sense of smell. An example of the latter is that he can identify the sender of a letter by merely sniffing its scent.
Due to his over-the-top nature, he's able to achieve feats that follow no logic whatsoever. He can grow muscles out of nowhere, stretch his limbs noodle-like, detach body parts from himself like it's no big deal, increase his size, form tornadoes of his own, fart at command, and multiply himself or split into hundreds of mini-Jyushimatsus that can invade a person's body and completely morph their personalities into his own.
When he overthinks about deep topics like the meaning of his existence, Jyushimatsu can even warp the world around him according to what he's debating over. In the anime he turned everything into kanji characters, under the belief that objects and people still own their identities even as they're turned into scribbles.
Because his more ridiculous abilities stem from him being a gag anime character, they can be clear cut nerfed out.
